Pictorial History

Before the arrival of white settlers, this region was occupied by Khoikhoi pastoralists and San hunter-gatherers. Towards the end of the 17th century the Dutch East India Company encouraged free burghers to settle and farm the land in the area beyond the Hottentots Holland Mountain. When French Huguenots arrived at the Cape in 1688, the Company hoped that viticulture and distilling would also succeed amongst the free burghers and they were given farms in areas already occupied by Dutch colonists, provided they stayed for at least five years.
